Hey hoos, check out this upcoming film event! Alain Gomis, French Senegalese filmmaker, will be visiting UVA from March 25th to March 27th.

As part of his visit, we will screen his film “Félicité”at the Newcomb Theater Tuesday March 26th 6.30 p.m.

The screening is open to all and will be followed by Q&A with the director.

Born in France into a Senegalese and Guinea-Bissauan family, Alain Gomis has made films between Africa and France. His movies follow deeply rooted characters undergoing challenging circumstances. Yet Alain’s movies never fall into stereotyping them.

“Félicité”, set in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, won the Jury Grand Prix award in the main competition at the Berlin International Film festival (2017). It also won the Golden Stallion of Yenenga at the Fespaco in Burkina Faso and was the Senegalese entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards, making the December shortlist.

Join us for Grammy Award-winning composer Richard Danielpour and Pulitzer Prize-winner and former U.S. Poet Laureate Rita Dove's collaboration 'A Standing Witness.' The song cycle, set to poems by Dove that reflect on the past 50 years of American history, will be performed by Susan Graham and Music from Copland House on Thursday, March 21, and Saturday, March 23, at 7:30 PM at Old Cabell Hall. Please join the UVA community in remembering Devin, Lavel, and D’Sean on the day one year ago when their lives were tragically cut short. At 12:55 p.m., the Chapel bells will play a verse of “Amazing Grace” followed by three tolls of the bells, honoring each life lost. Many in our community will gather near the Chapel and on the Lawn. For those who cannot gather on Grounds, the moment of remembrance will be streamed at the link in our bio.
