Policies

You will find our box office and ticketing policies below. If you have any questions, please reach out to our box office staff at artsboxoffice@virginia.edu.

How To Purchase Tickets

Tickets can be purchased online at artsboxoffice.virginia.edu 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as well as in person or by phone during business hours. Advance sales end two hours before the event begins.

Tickets can also be purchased at the door starting one hour before event start time, subject to availability.

All major credit cards are accepted as well as personal checks. Cash is accepted at the Arts Box Office and Old Cabell Hall but is not accepted at our remote box offices servicing off-Grounds venues.

Free UVA Student Tickets (Arts$)

Please see our policies regarding Arts$ tickets fully detailed here.

Service Fees

A non-refundable service fee will be charged automatically to all ticket orders, excluding free UVA Student tickets. This includes in-person, phone, and online ticket orders. Processing fees vary with the price of the tickets purchased.

100% of the ticket price goes directly to the event host, and service fees help to offset Arts Box Office’s costs associated with processing your ticket order, such as credit card processing fees, software and equipment costs, and staff time. We thank you for your support that helps us continue to bring passionate performances and intriguing events to the University and Charlottesville communities!

Ticket Delivery Options: Print-At-Home, Will Call, and Mail

Tickets purchased by phone or online can be delivered electronically, by mail, or held at Will Call. You can select your preferred delivery method at the time of purchase.

Electronic or Print-At-Home (PAH) tickets will arrive in your inbox after your confirmation email in a separate email as a PDF attachment.  You can choose to show your PAH ticket to venue staff on your phone, or you can print a copy of your PDF ticket(s) at home to bring with you to the venue.  Please note a confirmation email is not a ticket.  Each person in your party must present a PAH ticket with a unique barcode to be scanned for entry.

Will Call tickets can be picked up at the Arts Box Office during business hours or at the door starting one hour prior to the event. Please be prepared to show an order confirmation or photo ID. Please note: We are seeing a significantly higher number of Will Call tickets this season, and as such, we encourage you to pick up your tickets prior to your performance night at the Arts Box Office during business hours Tues-Fri from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. If you do plan to pick your tickets up at the door of an event, please arrive 15-30 minutes early to avoid lines and a crowded lobby.

Mail Delivery can be selected up to 15 days prior to the event. Please allow at least 7 business days for your tickets to arrive by mail. A $3.00 processing fee will be charged to patrons selecting USPS mail as their delivery method.

Misplaced Tickets

If you misplace a print-at-home ticket, you can request your print-at-home ticket to be emailed to you again by calling or visiting the Arts Box Office during business hours or emailing us at artsboxoffice@virginia.edu.

If you misplace a printed ticket, your ticket can be reprinted at the UVA Arts Box Office with a valid order confirmation and photo ID.  Tickets can also be reprinted at the door of an event, but please arrive 15-30 minutes early to request a reprint.

Exchanges

If there is more than one performance of the event you have purchased, you may be permitted to exchange your tickets for another date of the same event. Exchanges are subject to availability, client (event host) discretion, and a flat $2.00/order exchange fee.

Exchanges must be made at least 24 hours prior to the event, and the patron must be able to provide proof of purchase along with the physical tickets if applicable. Exchanges are not permitted for any event that has already started or between two different events. Free tickets cannot be exchanged. Please reserve a new free ticket for the date you wish to attend, and consider releasing your unused ticket with our Ticket Release Form.

For events with reserved seating, patrons may be permitted to change their seat selection prior to the start of the event, subject to availability. Please note that patrons are responsible for any difference in price when exchanging seats, as well as a flat $2.00/order exchange fee.

Select series offer season ticket subscribers the benefit of added flexibility to exchange tickets between dates free of charge. Please visit our Subscriptions page for more information.

Please note: The UVA Arts Box Office is unable to offer subscription exchanges for subscribers of the Tuesday Evening Concert Series.

Refunds

All sales are final. No refunds will be issued unless the event is canceled.

If you are unable to attend an event, we encourage you to release unused ticket(s) with our Ticket Release Form.

You may also be eligible to request a tax-deductible charitable donation for the face value of the tickets (excluding any service fees). To be eligible for a tax-deductible donation, requests must be received by 4:00 PM on the day of the performance if the event is scheduled on a weekday or 4:00 PM on the Friday prior to the event if the event is scheduled on a weekend. Tax-deductible donations are only recognized for released tickets to Charlottesville Symphony performances.

Group Sales

If you are interested in purchasing tickets for your group, please contact the Arts Box Office staff for assistance prior to placing your order. Group discounts are set by the event presenter and may be available for select events. Group orders may also be eligible for discounted service fees if ABO staff are contacted prior to making the group order purchase.

Season Subscriptions

Season subscriptions are available for select performance series including the Charlottesville Symphony and Tuesday Evening Concert Series. Subscribers are among our most valued patrons and receive priority seating for season performances as well as discounted pricing and other exclusive benefits.

Please contact the Charlottesville Symphony and Tuesday Evening Concert Series to purchase a subscription to their series.

Please visit our Subscriptions page for more information.

Seating and Accessibility

Please let our Box Office staff know prior to purchasing tickets when seating accommodations are required (wheelchair seating, aisle seat, etc.). Accessible seating prices and availability vary by event and venue. Please visit our Accessibility page for more information.

Late Seating

Please arrive at least 45 minutes in advance of an event to pick up tickets from Will Call or to purchase events at the door. If you already have your tickets, please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to event to take your seat. Doors open and seating begins approximately 30 minutes before the scheduled start time. Late seating information for each venue is listed below:

  • Culbreth, Helms, and Ruth Caplin Theatres: Patrons may be admitted after curtain at discretion of the venue manager but are not guaranteed their ticketed seat until intermission.
  • Old Cabell Hall: Doors are shut at the start of the event and reopen for late admission between pieces. For some events, there will be no late seating until intermission.
  • Virginia Film Festival: General admission seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, and late entry or late seating may be allowed at the discretion of the venue manager. Patrons seated late may be restricted to seating located in the rear of the theater.
Children and Infants

All attendees must have a ticket for entry, including children and infants in arms, due to fire code.

“Student” discount tickets may be purchased for:

  • anyone under 18,
  • students of any accredited college/university with valid student ID,
  • or UVA students who were not able to reserve a free Arts$ ticket by the deadline of 24 hours before the performance.

As a courtesy to artists and other patrons, please use discretion regarding a child’s ability to sit quietly and enjoy an event. Please note that most events are not appropriate for pre-school-age children, and anyone creating a disturbance during an event may be asked to leave.

For events at Old Cabell Hall, no children under the age of five will be allowed entry.

Inclement Weather & Cancellations

Please contact the Arts Box Office to check the status of any event that might be affected by severe weather. In most cases, an event will proceed as scheduled unless UVA is closed. To check the operational status of the University of Virginia, please visit UVA Emergency Information.

In the event that a performance is canceled, the Arts Box Office will contact patrons to offer a refund. Notice of cancellation will be posted on the events page.

Ticket Release

If you are unable to use your ticket, please use this form to release your single or subscription tickets. This form should not be used to request a refund or exchange. See “Refunds” above for our policy on ticket refunds and exchanges.

TECS Subscribers:  To release your seats, please call TECS office, 434-244-9505 or e-mail: assistant@tecs.org.

Requests must be received by 4:00 PM on the day of the performance if the event is scheduled on a weekday. If an event is scheduled on Sat or Sun, ticket releases must be received by 4:00 PM on the Friday prior to the event. Released tickets received by the stated deadline will be placed back on public sale in hopes that another patron or UVA student can attend the performance. We appreciate your support of UVA Arts programs and events by releasing the tickets you are no longer able to use!

* NOTE: If you are releasing tickets to a Charlottesville Symphony performance, a member of their staff will follow up with you to confirm your tax-deductible contribution. Only the original price of the purchased ticket(s) will be credited as your donation; processing fees will not be included.
